Asturias – Cabo Vidío and Playa de Silencio

One of the things I love about Asturias is its beaches. The dramatic shoreline and the cliffs remind me a bit of Cornwall in England.

The first place I had a chance to visit was Cabo Vidío. Its iconic lighthouse is apparently one of the newest and therefore the most modern in Spain.  Lots of people come here to watch the sunset although it amazed me even in the middle of the day.

You can walk around the lighthouse and see the shore on each side. On its highest point you are 100m above sea level looking straight down on the lovely blue colours of the sea.

The cliffs that had fallen in the sea provides an important shelter for the sea birds.

After this we went to sea the Playa de Silencio or the Beach of Silence. I have heard that this is the most beautiful beach in Asturias so I was really looking forward to see it. Well, it didn’t disappoint.

This beach has a perfect semicircle, or as the Spanish like to say, shell shape and this is even more emphasised by the wave line. The shore is not sandy but full of smooth colourful rocks.

Being on the Playa de Silencio feels like time has stopped. We all stopped talking when we got to the bottom of the stairs. The cliffs are standing around you high and mighty, the sun shines and sparkles on the surface of the sea and the waves have this monotone sound that dominates the atmosphere. It felt like this is how it was a hundred years ago and if you came back hundred years later it will still be the same.

Luckily the beach is relatively far from villages so getting there is only possible by car. This really helps to keep it the same way as it is now. There are no beach bars, shops or any other services around, only the smooth stones, the cliffs and the sea. I hope this will remain like this in the future so that the charm of the place stays the same.
